Disable That Bothersome iPhoto Downloader

Last week I was teaching a photographer basic Lightroom workflow. I notice that when she attached a media card reader to Mac G5, the iPhoto downloader opened at the same time as Lightroom’s photo downloader. As she closed the dialog, she mentioned that this happens every time she inserts a media card, even though she never uses iPhoto for downloading new photos onto her system. She had tried to turn if off in iPhoto’s preferences, but could never figure out how to do so. I wasn’t surprised because this irritating little program, at least for those not using iPhoto, runs from outside of iPhoto. It’s actually associate with a Mac program called Image Capture, which is set by default to open the iPhoto downloader.

If this little program is bothering you when you’re using Lightroom (or Bridge’s downloader) to download your files, here’s how you can turn it off:

1.) Go to the Applications folder and double-click on Image Capture. If you have a camera card connected to your system, you’ll see the upload dialog open. If you don’t have any image capture devices currently attached, you’ll see the following dialog. That’s okay. You can still work with the program’s preferences.

The Mac Image Capture dialog when no device is detected.

2.) Click on the Image Capture menu and choose Preferences.

3.) When the Preferences dialog box opens, as shown in the following image, Click on the Camera menu and choose No Application.

Choose No Application in the Camera preferences.

4.) Click OK.

That’s all there is to it. Now you won’t be bothered by that pesky iPhoto downloader ever again.
