A Great Resource for Camera Bag Repair/Modifications

Last year I bought a new backpack-style camera bag from Lowepro. It’s a Fastpack 250 that has lots of cool features. However, one thing it didn’t have was a way to strap my mono-pod onto the outside of the bag. I knew this would be an issue before I purchased the bag, but there were so many other things I liked about the bag, I decided to get it and see if I could find someone to modify it for me.

Because I live in the Pacific Northwest, it didn’t take long to find several businesses that specialize in repairing and modifying backpacks. I settled on Mountain Soles, located in Portland. This small business has been helping the area’s outdoor crowd since 1979. When I showed them my problem, they quickly came up with a solution. They sewed two lash-points onto my bag that now allow me to use straps to lash a monopod or a small tripod to the bag. This was invaluable on my recent photo trip to the Arizona desert.

If you live in the Portland area and you need to have some work done on any of your canvas bags, I highly recommend the folks at Mountain Soles. Just be aware that if you drop your bag off during peak backpacking/climbing season, it may take a couple of weeks to have your job completed. If you live outside the Portland area and you can’t find a descent repair option in your area, Mountain Soles also accepts jobs by mail order.
